As Labor Day approaches so does the first day of school. Children will likely be using backpacks to carry their belongings to and from school. Make sure that your child uses BOTH shoulder straps on the backpack to evenly distribute the weight. Also, a good rule-of-thumb is to keep the weight of the backpack and its contents to less than 10% of the weight of the child. Thus, if the child weighs 60 pounds, the (full) backpack should be six pounds or less. Following this rule will help prevent many neck and back problems commonly suffered by students of all ages.
